Dr. Puga graduated from Medical School for the University of Illinois, Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine. His post graduate training occurred at Lutheran General Hospital, where he specialized in General Psychiatry. He later acquired an additional specialty at the Medical College of Virginia, specializing in Child Psychiatry. Dr. Puga’s areas of interest and expertise include bipolar across the life span, complex psychopharmacology, depression, anxiety, medical and psychiatric combined complications.
Dr. Puga has over 25 years of experience and is fluent in English and Spanish. He also has limited fluency in French and Portuguese. He is a lifetime diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has extensive experience consulting with School Systems and providing care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He has served as unit medical director in multiple hospitals and various settings including adult and adolescent partial hospitalization programs, residential units, child and adolescent inpatient units, and Streamwood Behavioral Health Center’s Advanced Child Treatment unit. He was chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. He has served as a medical director of a community mental health center and also served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago and instructor through Rush University and St. Louis University. While in those rolls, he has taught medical students and residents and mentored nurse practitioner students. He lectures widely and has served as a child psychiatry consultant to primary care physicians in rural communities. He has been on consulting boards of juvenile justice court and graduate school. He has had multimedia exposure through news interviews domestically and internationally and has been invited for clinical appearances on TV and radio talk shows. He has been published in a professional journal and co-authored a chapter in a medical text.
